December’s UK and Irish Awards had no shortage of talent in every category. With many top-ranked fighters and up-and-comers in action, there was always going to be plenty on offer.

The next awards (starting when things kick back in at the start of February) will signal the start of the 2014 UK and Irish MMA Awards, and winners from each month will be put forward for the year end awards. If you’re a UK MMA company and you’d like to be involved in sponsoring a category then please get in touch – all prizes/sponsorship will go to the fighters.

In 2013, the awards started too late to take the year as a whole, so the highest voted winner in each category (since they returned in September) will win a free Caged Steel T-Shirt.

With BAMMA, Cage Warriors, CSFC and more all fielding good cards, here’s what you chose as the best of the action in December 2014.

UK/Irish MMA Awards: December 2013 Winners

UK/Irish Fighter of the Month – December 2013

Winner: Jack Grant (27%)

There’s a reason Jack Grant is one of the most talked about prospects in UK MMA at the moment. His exemplary amateur record was something to behold, and just five fights in to his pro career he decides to challenge lightweight veteran Jason Ball.

For every pro fight on Grant’s resume, Ball has had seven, but you’d never have guessed it in the cage. The Grimsby man took it to Ball from the opening bell and was the first person to stop him via strikes in thirty fights. Given the level of competition Ball has faced, that’s certainly something.

The win propelled Grant up the rankings, and fans of UK MMA will know to keep their eyes on his next move.

Runners Up:

-Paul Daley (19%) – The always popular striker scored a good win at BAMMA
-Joanne Calderwood (16%) – Remained undefeated in Invicta and signed for the next TUF series
-Jack Mason (11%) – Topped off an excellent year in Cage Warriors

International Fighter of the Month – December 2013

Winner: Jim Alers (45%)

Cage Warriors featherweight champion Jim Alers took this one by a landslide following another successful defence of his title in Dublin. Alers submitted Graham Turner with a North-South choke to extend his record to 12-1, and 7-0 with CWFC.

Many people are now certain Alers is UFC-bound, such is the tradition forming with Cage Warriors champions. It would definitely be deserved for the Orlando native, who will see the UFC head to his home city in the spring.

Runners Up:

-Mansour Barnaoui (15%) – Another massive win over Colin Fletcher
-Ivan Buchinger (13%) – A more successful NYE outing this time saw him take the LW title
-Mohamed Ali (8%) – Ever-improving light-heavyweight under the CWFC banner

Fight of the Month – December 2013

Winner: Mansour Barnaoui vs. Colin Fletcher (BAMMA 14) – 31%

A rather short but sweet affair at BAMMA 14 had everything packed into its four minutes of combat. It was back and forth, with both fighters getting knockdowns. Fletcher was the first to have success, but the durable Barnaoui replied when he had recovered, dropping Fletcher and eventually working for a rear naked choke.

Both men showed their skills, and it’s certainly a fight fans would love to see again. That’s 11-2 now for Barnaoui, who has been taking big scalps of late.

Runners Up:

-Steven Ray vs. Ivan Buchinger at CWFC 63 (23%) – Excellent main event in Dublin
-Tommy Quinn vs. Dan Hope at CWFC 62 (20%) – Ever-exciting welterweights put on a show
-Tom Duquesnoy vs. James Saville at BAMMA 14 (16%) – Featherweight action at BAMMA 14

Event of the Month – December 2013

Winner: Cage Warriors 63 – 34%

The Helix can’t fail to play host to amazing events it seems. Every time Cage Warriors have been there, the fights and atmosphere have been off the scale. The latest NYE show was no different, with two title fights, close decisions and great finishes.

You voted it your number one event of December in a strong field, and it topped off a monumental year for the promotion.

Runners Up:

-BAMMA 14 (25%) – Packed card with great fights in Birmingham
-CSFC 6 (20%) – Burgeoning Doncaster event had plenty of action

Knockout of the Month – December 2013

Winner: Paul Daley (BAMMA 14) – 36%

That rocket of a left hand always has a chance of putting opponents to sleep. Daley relied on it yet again to dispatch a tough adversary in Romario da Silva. After a range-finding first round, ‘Semtex’ started hitting his mark and delivered a lethal knockout blow in the second.

As Daley finishes usually do, it attracted a lot of attention and got him back to winning ways. Fans will always tune in to watch Daley for this exact reason – he provides fireworks.

Runners Up:

-Martin Sheridan (31%) – Emphatic knee KO over Jordan Desborough
-Jack Grant (23%) – Huge stoppage win over Jason Ball

Submission of the Month – December 2013

Winner: Ian Entwistle (Cage Warriors 62) – 35%

Ian Entwistle came up against the durable Liam James at CWFC in Newcastle, and given his last notable appearance against Mick Bowman, it was quite clear to most that we were going to see James fending off some leg attacks at some point.

Not many thought it would be so emphatic and so soon as Entwistle deftly moved under a punch into the heel hook attempt, getting the tap in just twenty-four seconds before James even had time to realise he was in a fight. Now becoming known for his leglock attacks, that’s two in a row for the Accrington man.

Runners Up:

-Jim Alers at CWFC 63 (27%) – North-South choke finish over Graham Turner
-Andy Craven at BAMMA 14 (12%) – Another heel hook for the Grimsby man.
-Jack Cartwright at CSFC 6 (12%) – Nice D’arce choke finish for the amateur fighter

That’s how the votes were cast after an exciting month of UK MMA. With no action in January, we’ll have to wait until February until there’s more action to seek out the best in UK and Irish MMA.
