July saw the UFC return to Dublin in undoubtedly Europe’s biggest event of the year so far. Though there were some regional events, it’s not surprising that the ‘big show’ took most of the accolades.

All monthly winners (and a selection of "wild card" runners up) will go into the year end awards to be crowned ‘Best of UK and Irish MMA in 2014′. They will be sponsored by Caged Steel (any other potential sponsors please contact us for great marketing for your business, with everything going to the fighters).

Here’s what you chose as the best of the action in July 2014.

UK/Irish MMA Awards: July 2014 Winners

UK/Irish Fighter of the Month – July 2014

Winner: Conor McGregor (44%)

As if there could be any doubt, Conor ‘The Notorious’ McGregor got the most votes for Fighter of the Month in our July awards, mostly down to his emphatic victory over Diego Brandao in the UFC Dublin main event.

The charismatic Irishman delivered on every promise he had made before the fight, whipping the crowd into a frenzy before delivering an explosive finish over a tough adversary.

From there, an almost immediately confirmed return saw McGregor step up to face Dustin Poirier in Las Vegas. More promises have been made and the world will be watching closely to see whether he can deliver again.

Runners Up:

-Paddy Holohan (23%) – Great UFC debut for ‘The Hooligan’.
-Chi Lewis Parry (16%) – Picked up his first One FC victory.
-Neil Seery (7%) – Got his first UFC win in his hometown.

International Fighter of the Month – July 2014

Winner: Gunnar Nelson (73%)

Again, this one will come as a surprise to nobody, considering Gunnar Nelson’s popularity here and the way he dealt with an experienced opponent at UFC Dublin.

Though the start was tentative, as soon as Nelson had Zak Cummings where he wanted him he did what he does best; throttling people. Nelson remains undefeated in the UFC and overall, and has been given a main event slot in Sweden off the back of the win.

Runners Up:

-Ian McCall (14%) – Got the better of Brad Pickett in their grudge match.
-Ilir Latifi (11%) – Excellent finish from the Swede in Dublin.

Fight of the Month – July 2014

Winner: Cathal Pendred vs. Mike King – UFC Dublin (63%)

Fans of MMA in Europe know how tough and durable Cathal Pendred is. We’ve seen him point-blank refuse to tap out to grim-looking submissions, and we’ve seen him grit his teeth through onslaughts of strikes that would have put many men away.

In Dublin, Pendred showed this resilience to the world. Mike King put a beating on him in the first round of their middleweight matchup, but he couldn’t quite seal the deal, appearing to use up a lot of energy in the process.

This left Pendred with a chance, and coming out for the second round he took the opportunity as soon as it came. Getting a dominant position on the ground, Pendred choked King out in double quick time for an emotional victory.

Runners Up:

-Neil Seery vs. Phil Harris – UFC Dublin (22%)
-Alex Dykes vs. Connor Robinson – Ice FC 3 (8%)

Event of the Month – July 2014

Winner: UFC Dublin (92%)

The other events didn’t stand a chance. The fights, the fans, the build-up; everything climaxed in an awe-inducing night of entertainment in Dublin. McGregor fever played a part, but so did every other Irish fighter on the bill who put on great performances and got some big victories under their belt.

Overall though, it was the fans that stood out. There has never been an atmosphere quite like it. The intensity and ferocity with which the Irish got behind their own was on another level, but the whole night saw them at fever pitch, earning them many more events to come no doubt.

Runners Up:

-ICE FC 3 (5%) – Up-and-coming North West show.
-Fury MMA 11 (1%) – London show with some interesting matchups.

Knockout of the Month – July 2014

Winner: Conor McGregor (55%)

July’s Fighter of the Month also got your nod for Knockout of the Month, dispatching Diego Brandao inside a round and putting on a well-rounded mixed martial arts display.

The magnitude of the KO wasn’t such in the finish itself, but the event, the talk, and the clinical execution of his earlier promises. Now McGregor goes on to legitimate top ten fights, earned by his skills as well as his self-marketing showmanship.

Runners Up:

-Chi Lewis Parry (27%) – Brutal elbows in One FC.
-Ilir Latifi (11%) – Heavy leg kicks and punches to get a good stoppage.
-Dean Williams (8%) – Regional fighter makes the grade with a big left hook.

Submission of the Month – July 2014

Winner: Paddy Holohan (38%)

Many thought Paddy Holohan was up against it when he took on American Josh Sampo in his UFC debut. However, much like the rest of his SBG camp, Holohan was confident. The confidence showed as he showed excellent striking and grappling en route to picking up a great victory.

Holohan hurt Sampo before sealing the deal with a choke, making it a pure MMA finish, and one the Dublin crowd certainly enjoyed.

Runners Up:

-Gunnar Nelson (32%) – Slick as ever from the Icelandic fighter.
-Cathal Pendred (19%) – From-behind choke, from behind.
-Dayman Lake (4%) – Arm triangle submission for his latest victory.
