UK And Irish MMA Awards: October 2013 Results

The votes are in, and here's what you've deemed the best of UK MMA from October 2013.

The fans have spoken again, and after some closely fought polls, October’s winners have been chosen by you.

The awards returned too late for the 2013 year to be taken as a whole, so the victors that had the highest number of votes after December will be awarded some goods from our sponsors, including Caged Steel. If you’re a UK MMA company and would like to get involved in rewarding the top talent, contact us.

As of 2014, all monthly winners will be entered into the yearly awards for bigger prizes.

With the UFC’s second UK event of the year in Manchester. there was plenty of interest this time around. Domestic events kept them on their toes though, and below you’ll find how the voting went.

UK/Irish Fighter of the Month – October 2013

Winner: Steven Ray (29%)

It’s hardly a surprise that Steven Ray’s feat was acknowledged by the majority of you voting in this month’s awards, with two wins in one night over tough adversaries crowning him the Cage Warriors lightweight champion.

Dinky Ninja Ray is still young and has many years ahead of him in MMA, but achieved an accolade most fighters never will. He overcame the experience of Jason Ball in fight one, and then the undefeated enthusiasm of Sean Carter in fight two, claiming the belt and a big jump up the rankings.

Runners Up:

-Luke Barnatt (17%) – A great performance from Bigslow in Manchester
-Eugene Fadiora (11%) – Scored a TKO win in his Bellator debut
-Jimi Manuwa (11%) – Maintained his unbeaten streak in the UFC

International Fighter of the Month – October 2013

Winner: Lyoto Machida (56%)

As likeable as a fighter can be, and with skills that made him a UFC world champion, this was a runaway victory for Lyoto Machida.

Machida headlined UFC Fight Night 30 in Manchester opposite Mark Munoz. In his middleweight debut the Brazilian looked in great shape, as well as fast and vicious when it was needed.

His sportsmanship no doubt earned him even more fans, and he was your favourite international fighter in the month of October.

Runners Up:

-Gael Grimaud (12%) – Huge win over Carvalho for the former CWFC champion
-Jimmy Hettes (10%) – Composed victory over Whiteford in Manchester

Fight of the Month – October 2013

Winner: Ronnie Mann vs. Marat Petkov (CWFC FN 9) – 38%

Marat Petkov didn’t come to just make up the numbers against Ronnie Mann in Jordan. He took it to the experienced Bellator veteran and made him work for his money over the course of fifteen minutes.

Some expected man to have it all his way, but it wasn’t the case at all. However, he did pick up a deserved victory after a hard fought battle, and he can’t be far away from earning that CWFC title shot.

Runners Up:

-Harry Marple vs. Joe Nazakatov at ECC 1 (23%) – Great back-and-forth amateur title fight in Blackpool
-Charlie Watts vs. Ben Constantine at CWFC 60 (20%) – Slugfest over three rounds

Event of the Month – October 2013

Winner: UFC Fight Night 30 – 43%

Again, when the ‘big show’ is in town, it’s hard to see how it can be topped. You voted in your hundreds for UFC Fight Night 30, with its share of drama, finishes, and even controversy.

Although there were several fights ending in unfortunate circumstances, the name value, hard-fought battles, and an emphatic main event KO saw you crown it as the best.

Runners Up:

-Cage Warriors 60 (25%) – Huge event at the HMV Forum in London
-ECC Banned 1 (13%) – Debut outing for the new North West promotion

Knockout of the Month – October 2013

Winner: Lyoto Machida (UFC Fight Night 30) – 56%

As if you had to read further down to predict this one – Lyoto Machida’s head kick KO over Mark Munoz was by far the most voted for finish of October in the UK.

The fight started tentatively, and it was the first real significant strike. It was fast, brutal and accurate. Machida felled Munoz instantly, and knew his opponent was done as he went to seal the deal, resisting and letting the referee step in, announcing a majorly impressive step down to middleweight.

Runners Up:

-Amanda Kelly at CWFC 60 (12%) – Excellent Muay Thai skills from Kelly
-Andrew De-Vent at ECC 1 (10%) – Huge overhand right from ‘Lion’s Paw’

Submission of the Month – October 2013

Winner: Danny Mitchell (Caged Fighters 6) – 28%

There were so many worthy entries into this category, it got the most votes of all of the polls. There were notable finishes that didn’t even make top three but still had a lot of interest, such as finishes from Luke Barnatt and Brad Scott in the UFC.

It was the rarely seen twister that really caught your eye though, as Danny Mitchell cranked his way to victory at Caged Fighters 6. Not his first flashy submission, ‘The Cheesecake Assassin’ has flying triangles on his resume, amongst others.

Runners Up:

-Paul Sass at Bellator 104 (18%) – Nice toehold finish from the Kaobon man
-Ivan Buchinger at CWFC 60 (14%) – Slick keylock set-up from Buki

That’s how the votes were cast after an exciting month of UK MMA. The big names of the UFC got a lot of attention and ultimately pulled in most of the votes this time around.

However, established domestic shows still got the nod in some categories, and even the new breed as ECC were in the running for their first show.
